Cost saving Ideas

Check out some of the ways that other T.E.A.C.H. recipients are saving time and money during these tough times.

cardboard tube photoTransport pictures without wrinkles, use a tube!

Children can decorate a paper towel tube using paint, markers, glitter, stickers, construction paper and crayons. This becomes a colorful carrying tube to take pictures home or to class. This also works to get homework projects back and forth. —T.E.A.C.H. program coordinator

Q-tip photo Q-tips® are paint brushes in a pinch!
Place one drop of food coloring on the end of a Q-tip. Allow Q-tips to dry for 30-60 minutes. Do a LOT at once, using a pegboard to hold the swabs upright as you drop the coloring on the tips. Then store them in Ziploc® baggies. When ready to paint all you need are smocks, paper and a bowl of water. Dip the end with the color in water briefly (the less time in the water—the brighter the color). A great way to use imagination! —T.E.A.C.H. program coordinator

MagicJack photo Save money on your phone bill!

If you have high speed internet, buy a MagicJack that connects to the usb port on your computer. Then connect your phone line into the MagicJack and make all your calls through it. You can also have an answering machine service with it. MagicJack cost $20 plus shipping and comes with one year free service for the phone. Phone service last year cost me $20.00 for all calls made in the United States and Canada. For more information, check out www.magicjack.com. This was a huge savings for me in this time of recession. —Katherine Ahoe

plastic box photoI have just recently started, since Gerber baby food comes in plastic containers now, using the plastic container with lids to sort beads, brass brads, wiggle eyes, etc. I also use them for the kids to start seeds in. Why not make the most of them? —Becky Wegschied

ziploc bag box photoSave time and money!

If I am going to brown hamburger, make chicken, pancakes, noodles, etc. , I make a lot at once and store the extras in portion-size freezer bags or plastic Ziploc containers. Then I’m ready for the next meal in minutes. —Cherie Grams
