picnic drawingTHEME: Summer Time Fun:
Picnics and BBQ

Large Group Activity: Picnic Basket Fun

  • Bring in a picnic basket to large group time, and ask children what they think the basket is for.
  • Ask what they think is inside the basket.
  • Select a few children to pick out something from the basket (e.g. paper plates, cups, forks, spoons, ketchup, napkins, blanket, pictures of food appropriate for a picnic, etc.)
  • Ask each child to talk about the items they have chosen from the basket.

Art Activity: Ketchup and Mustard Bottle Painting

  • Fill a ketchup bottle with thick red tempera paint. Fill a mustard bottle with thick yellow tempera paint.
  • Encourage the children create their own designs or drawings on construction paper.

Math: BBQ Sauce Tasting

  • Encourage children to dip bite size cucumbers or celery into several different types of barbeque sauce.
  • Ask which sauce they like best.
  • Chart children's responses on a experience chart.
  • Discuss which sauce has the most responses, which sauce has the least and why.
