Counselor's Message

Shelly's photoHello, T.E.A.C.H. MINNESOTA recipients!

I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the start of summer. Our family is appreciating the raspberries and strawberries from our garden, especially my kids (the youngest cutely calls them “burries”)!

This week I have been teaching the preschool children at our church’s vacation Bible school, which has been an excellent experience for me. It is reminding me about all the education, skills and tools that enhance a person’s ability to successfully teach and care for young children.

Thank you all for the time and energy you spend with your children and the time and energy you devote to improving your skills as a child care professional.

Award opportunity for high school seniors – Judy Lindman Memorial Scholars program
Just a few weeks ago, we awarded three Judy Lindman Memorial Scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year. In the summer of 2009, we awarded our first Judy Lindman Memorial Scholars forgivable loan, which honors Lindman’s dedication to the child care field. It is designed to encourage high school seniors to pursue an associate’s degree in early childhood education or child development. We particularly hope that individuals from underrepresented backgrounds or providers who work with underrepresented populations will apply for the scholarship. For more information, please call the T.E.A.C.H. office.

Pre-authorization request forms due July 31
Pre-authorization request forms for fall 2010 must be e-mailed, faxed or mailed to me by July 31, 2010 so I can send your college(s) a “third-party billing letter” notifying them that T.E.A.C.H. will pay for your approved credits. If you miss this deadline, you may be responsible for paying for your tuition and then requesting reimbursement. The pre-authorization request form is online at: http://www.mnchildcare.org/TEACH/forms.php.

It is fine to register before or after completing this form, depending on your school’s schedule. However, if you have already registered and we do not approve payment for all credits, you are responsible for either dropping those credits or paying for them yourself. If you drop or add classes, you must send us an updated pre-authorization form. Updated pre-authorization forms will be accepted after the July 31 deadline.

Document submission timeline for summer and fall terms
If you are unable to submit documents on time, you must communicate with us promptly. Any late documents may have an adverse affect on your application for a future T.E.A.C.H. scholarship. Due to limited staff hours, we do not notify you when we receive your paperwork. However, e-mail or call me if you would like confirmation of receipt.

E-mail, mail or fax all the documents listed below. If you fax them, include your name on every page.

  • Send in pre-authorization request form by July 31, 2010.
  • Send in summer 2010 grades no later than three weeks after the end of the term.
  • As soon as you have purchased your books for the fall semester, send in a completed Form B (available online at http://mnchildcare.org/TEACH/forms.php), copies of book receipts and of your college course registration. The course registration lists all the classes you are taking for the term; it is not your detailed student account balance. If you do not purchase books, please indicate this on Form B.
  • Once we receive all of the paperwork listed above and the bill from the college, you will receive a check or an invoice from us. In general, colleges send us their invoices about four to six weeks after the start of the term, so you can expect to receive a check or bill from us about halfway through the term.

T.E.A.C.H. office hours
With rare exceptions (such as vacations or sick leave), you can reach T.E.A.C.H. staff by phone between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you call and no one answers, please leave a message! We may be in a meeting or processing paperwork but we will call you back. You may also reach us via e-mail.
